This summer we are providing unprecedented opportunities to not only discover the world’s most secretive country at a unique and analytical depth, but also for you to study there well. Our two recently announced programs, the Hamgyong Summer Study Program and the Kim Chol Ju University Program, offer you the surreal chance to study in North Korea, learning Korean language in local institutions. You will have the opportunity to practice with locals and expand your horizons. Both programs have amazing highlights. With the Hamgyong program, study at the Chongjin School of Foreign Languages whilst exploring the relatively unknown North East of the DPRK. Even spend a unique homestay with a North Korean rural family! Alternatively, study at length in Pyongyang at Kim Chol Ju University, travelling to cities all over the country on weekends. Regardless of the one you choose, either way, we cannot say there are any better prospects of experiencing the country at this depth than these two programs.
Why study in North Korea?
Of all the countries you could choose to study in, why North Korea? To study in North Korea, not least a North Korean institution offers you a learning experience which few other countries can. Whilst the Korean language is an incredible asset to have, to be able to say you have studied in North Korea grants you an insight, experience and understanding that few other people in the world have. For those aspiring for careers in international relations, academia and diplomacy, to have something like this on your CV is a standout feature which implies open-mindedness, objectivity and incredible insight. Beyond yourself, such a study offers a powerful opportunity to engage North Korea and expand its connection with the outside world, building bridges of peace, trust and harmony above conflict and confrontation. In every sense, studying in North Korea is a powerful investment, an investment in yourself but also in a better world.
Cultural Enrichment
If we are to work with North Korea, we must understand North Korea, we must understand its people. We must move beyond western stereotypes and cliques in order to dive below the surface and examine things properly. to study in North Korea is therefore not just learning about the language, but its learning about a people and culture which have existed for millennia. Whilst some people may say “study in South Korea instead!”, a study program in the North provides insights into a more traditional way of life, a culture unreached by globalization. Regardless of your thoughts on the regime, there is so much to learn about Korean people themselves. Both of these study tours represent the cultural learning of a lifetime.
Conclusion: Be a Pioneer
The North Korean study programs offer you the chance to be a pioneer, going against the grain, studying in a country which most people would never consider, breaking down barriers and building bridges. There is no malice in education, there is no malice in learning a foreign language and no malice in questioning your assumptions about a country which is poorly understood. For character building, incredible learning experiences and broadening your horizons, you might struggle to find anything better.
