North and South Korea are looking into placing a joint bid to host the 2023 Women’s Football World Cup, FIFA confirmed today. The proposed bid will compete against that from a number of football federations around the world, described as a “record total”. In line with a joint bid being prepared to host the Olympics in 2032, it marks a surge in inter-korean sporting initiatives since the facilitation of peace on the Korean peninsula last year.
In judging the eventual hosts of the competition, FIFA has pledged a fair and transparent process. If issues are not resolved however in the long run, withstanding international sanctions may complicate the process, something that has became a sticking point in Pyongyang’s negotiations with Washington.
