Yesterday Sunderland Association Football Club launched its official North Korea supporters branch made possible thanks to the work of Visit North Korea. The creation of the branch is an unprecedented achievement, as it constitutes the first and only foreign football team in the world to have an organised commitment and representation for the DPRK. Its announcement comes on the back of our campaign several weeks ago to turn the country “Red and White”, aiming to build support for the wearside football team in the country in a way that has never been done before.
We are appreciative of Sunderland A.F.C’s open minded approach to other countries, cultures and peoples alike, as well as the enthusiasm of the club’s directors to spread the the passion and spirit of wearside to the wider world. Despite the club’s more recent struggles, we know that Sunderland is something to be proud of and in spreading our name, we can bring peoples and societies so far apart together through the love and enthusiasm of the black cats. No political circumstances should ever act as an obstacle to that. Given this, we are deeply excited for the tenure ahead as we aim to collect and donate SAFC shirts to North Korean people. It is an effort that will produce a titular change for the better from both Pennywell to Pyongyang.
