You have probably heard at this point of our study in North Korea program by this point, your chance to study at a real DPRK university. Each summer, we give people around the world the opportunity to enroll in Korean classes in Kim Chol Ju University, Pyongyang. But of course, that’s likely to bring you more questions than answers. You’re probably wondering “How can you study in North Korea?” and what do you need to do to join such a course? On this article we explain just that! Rather than being something complex, bureaucratic and scary, our message to you is that to join our program is in fact an easy, straightforwards and uncomplicated process. Let’s find out how!
First of all, the great thing about our course is that it is open to pretty much everyone over 18 (excluding unfortunately: US and South Korean citizens). You don’t have to worry about past educational experience, about grades, personal statements or academic references to join. It’s open, welcoming and simple. Instead, we provide you with a very simple application form during booking. The form asks some simple details, including of course your name, address, date of birth, passport details, emergency contacts and so on. If you wish to formally join our course. You submit this, along with our other required documents during booking, pay your 30% deposit and you’re all aboard!
What happens next? Next, as with any North Korea trip, you can arrange with us to process your North Korean visa which we will hand to you in Beijing. Then of course, you need to arrange your double entry Chinese visa! Once both of these hurdles are out of the way, you then meet up with us next to Beijing railway station on the first day of the itinerary and we travel together by train to Pyongyang. Once in the DPRK, we will then be able to introduce you to the university and your teachers! Here, you will learn Korean intensively! You’re part of the course!
As an additional question, no pre-hand knowledge of Korean language is needed in order to join! When at Kim Chol Ju University, you will be sorted into groups depending on your level of Korean, which means you can join as an absolute beginner but also if you already have some knowledge of the language too! So there is enough room for everybody! But there you have it: to join our program to study in North Korea is in fact not as difficult or challenging as it may seem!
